SIDNEA  D'AMICO

Aritst Statement

I explore the relationship between representational and abstract imagery expanding my visual vocabulary.  My process involves building surface, and then scratching away most of what was originally painted.  As I scratch I become in touch, literally and metaphorically with the painting.  Some images survive, others are buried, some remain large while others become more intimate in scale.  Images and ideas metamorphose unpredictable.  For me painting is a matter of listening and keeping my mind receptive and truly in the present moment.  I know a painting is done when I sense harmony and when I hear no sound coming from it anymore.  Often, it ends in a balance of reds.  Red for me is a vibrant hum, able to synthesize diametric opposites in a kind of metamorphic transformation.  It is nascent and apocalyptic, ecstatic and excruciating, present and transcendent, and, like the act of painting itself, essentially and radiantly human.
