KIRSTEN STOLLE
Artist Statement
Room to breathe. This is an integral part of my painting process. I'm interested in areas left untouched, negative space, tension between two forms. Organic and playful shapes, many of which I find in nature, grab my attention. A sense of humor, which is abundant in my life, certainly shows up in much of my work.
Originally a printmaker, I found that the process of painting with wax and oil pigments fascinated me. As with my prints, I'm able to layer and rework the surface, building up each painting slowly. Manipulating the wax with hand-held and electric tools permits each layer to inform the next, allowing the piece to develop a sense of history. While there is often some initial planning, the final surface is both a result of control and chance.
Overall, I'm interested in art where you can see the mark of the hand. The gouged line, the scratch mark, the brushstroke there is energy there, evidence of the artist left behind.
