BIO
A native of New York, Jury Smith studied Visual Arts at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Pennsylvania State University, Tyler School of Art of Temple University, and Sanboa Ceramic Art Institute, China. Her earthenware clay sculptures are reductive and process-driven. With material investigations as visual explorations into the nature of time and space, Smith began making site-specific pieces in 1999, shortly after moving to the Philadelphia area. Since 2005, she has narrowed her focus to a singular object. The forms are made visually heavy yet actually buoyant. Linear elements reference waterlines, mapping the objects' density when it is suspended in fluid. Smith has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, at such places as the as The Fleisher Art Memorial (Philadelphia), Jingdezhen University (China), The Clay Studio (Philadelphia), Artists Space (NYC), and Blutenweiss Gallery (Germany), Lincoln Art Center (CA), The Mantis Collective (PA), and Benton/Nyce Gallery (NY). Smith taught in the Ceramics Department of Tyler School of Art from 2002 until 2005. She now teaches Visual Art at Saint Joseph’s University with a focus on Ceramics.
